Little Boy Made This Woman Tear Up. But She Wasn't Prepared For What Followed.

During the waning years of the Depression in a small southeastern Idaho community, I used to stop by Brother Miller's roadside stand for farm-fresh produce as the season made it available. Food and money were still extremely scarce and bartering was used extensively.

One particular day, Brother Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Brother Miller and the ragged boy next to me.

"Hello, Barry, how are you today?"

"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas -- sure look good."

"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"

"Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."

"Good. Anything I can help you with?"

"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas."

"Would you like to take some home?"

"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."

"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"

"All I got's my prize marble here."

"Is that right? Let me see it."

"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."

"I can see that. Hmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?"

"Not 'zackley but, almost."

"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."

"Sure will. Thanks, Mr. Miller."

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said: "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps."

I left the stand, smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later, I moved to Utah but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys and their bartering.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.

Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community, and while I was there, I learned that Brother Miller had died. They were having his viewing that evening, and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon our arrival at the mortuary, we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits, and white shirts...very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing smiling and composed, by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her, and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary, awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about the marbles. Eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young men that just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size...they came to pay their debt.

"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided,"but, right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho."

With loving gentleness, she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three magnificently shiny red marbles.

Moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds.

What This Stranger Did To Help A Homeless Man Is Inspiring Others

When Alex Camarillo helped a Houston homeless man he never dreamed that his good deed would inspire so many.
Alex was out shopping for truck and went to get something to eat when he noticed Stanley Long asking for money and food. He invited Stanley to come inside the restaurant and eat with him. Over lunch he learned that Stanley had left his job to care for his sick mother, but when she passed away, he ended up on the streets.
Alex spoke with USA Today and explains that he helped Stanley because he knows what it’s like to be broke and just felt like he needed to help.

Alex shared a few pictures and what he felt about meeting Stanley on his Facebook page in the hopes of inspiring others:
“I told him join me, sit with me, and eat with me. He couldn’t believe it, this man and I had an intellectual conversation, smarter then some of my friends.. People stared at me as in why was I eating with a homeless man you would be shocked at how people were looking and whispering and pointing and some even taking picture… He told me his story and, wow, life takes wild turns.”

“I then told him I was going to buy him clothes and I did. This man showed me the true meaning of happiness and being grateful. All I can say fb friends, if you have been blessed please help those in need. I’m sure if you were in need you would want someone to reach out and help…Please lets Pay it forward! Together we can make a difference!!”

I’m sure Alex’s act of kindness was very much appreciated by Stanley. It’s inspiring to see someone step forward and not only reach out to someone in need, but also to encourage others to do the same.

Vending Machine Takes Bottles & Gives Food To Stray Dogs In Exchange

A company in Turkey called Pugedon has created a somewhat bizarre but effective way – their vending machine in Istanbul takes bottles deposited for recycling and dispenses food for the city’s stray dogs.

The machine works because the profit from the recycled bottles covers the cost of the dog food that the machine dispenses. Istanbul is known for its high number of stray dogs – some estimates say that there are as many as 150,000. Some locals love having the dogs around, who have adjusted so well to city life that they stop at traffic lights and walkways, but others want to get rid of them because of their aggression and their role as disease vectors.

Someone Was Happy in The End- A short Story

"Mumma I want those glasses," shouted the boy while the family came out of the auditorium. It was the first time he had watched a 3D movie. All the cool and colorful stuff in an extra dimension fascinated him. He thought that the world would look awesome and come alive when he looked through the glasses. Little did he know that the world was already awesome and cruel enough in its three dimensions. About the life, yes, the world has been dead partly of late.

"No, son. We have to return the glasses back to the cinema staff after watching the movie."
"No, no. I want it, I want it." he cried again.

His father went inside the hall again and purchased the glasses. The worker was reluctant to give it, but money, you see, can buy almost everything. He gave the glasses to his son and they got into the car.

"Why does this not look as it looked inside? It's not the same."
"It's the same boy."
"No, it's not the same." the boy shouted again as his father drove the car.
"If it's not the same then throw it and shut up." the mother replied, irritated.

The boy pressed, disfigured the glasses and threw them out of the car.

A group of street children ran after the car. They used to run after every shiny, swift car. One of them saw the falling pieces of glass. He picked them up and gazed at them for some time. The glasses were colorful, red and green. He smiled like he just found a box full of jewels. He took a piece of glass and looked through it. The world looked beautiful with a greenish tint. Then he took the red piece and kept it over the other eye. He gazed at the beautiful patterns his tiny eyes created in the air in amazement. He laughed and ran towards his friends to show them the miracle.

Someone was happy in the end.

Portland installs turbines in their city water pipes, powers city by flushing toilets

Hydoelectric turbines have been installed in one of the main water pipelines in Portland, Oregon, utilizing the water pressure to produce electricity.

The turbines work where water is flowing downhill, and are already recouping some of the energy cost in keeping the water system running. When fully in place, these pipe generators can power hundreds of thousands of homes.

Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, followed his dream of "helping water become more sustainable" by developing this smart piping system. Not only are they electricity generators, they also have state of the art sensors to detect change in water pressure to keep pipes from bursting, and the ability to detect if drinking water is contaminated.

For water utilities, which use massive amounts of electricity, the system can make it cheaper to provide clean drinking water. Utilities can either use the power themselves or sell it to a city as a new source of revenue.

"We have a project in Riverside, California, where they're using it to power streetlights at night," Semler says. "During the day, when electricity prices are high, they can use it to offset some of their operating costs."

In Portland, one of the city's main pipelines now uses Lucid's pipes to make power that's sent into the grid. Though the system can't generate enough energy for an entire city, the pipes can power individual buildings like a school or library, or help offset a city's totalenergy bill. Unlike wind or solar power, the system can generate electricity at any time of day, regardless of weather, since the pipes always have water flowing through them.

The army rescuers of this elephant couldn't believe their eyes! Raju the elephant touched everyone with his amazing reaction...after 50 years of captivity!

This is the story of Raju the elephant that among other animals all over the planet has been a victim of abuse and longtime captivity. To be more specific Raju spent his whole life in captivity entertaining tourists and guests of his owner in the Uttar Pradesh area of India. After being poached from his mother he was thrown from one owner to another, until he was left living in terrible conditions with no shelter at night, being used as a beggar prop all day long. Raju survived only from passing tourists and sometimes had to eat plastic and paper while being chained 24 hours a day. North London-based charity Wildlife SOS stepped in to save Raju from dying in his bonds after learning of his plight in India. So, a few days ago, a 10-strong team of vets and wildlife experts from the charity were joined by 20 forestry department officers and six policemen to seize Raju from his suffering in the Uttar Pradesh.

The army rescuing is about to begin, while Raju is chained and waits his next day torture...

The mission took place under the cover of darkness, as fewer people would be around for the dangerous rescue and the animal could be protected from the searing heat of the sun.

The chains were so tightly wrapped that it took 45 minutes to liberate him.

Wildlife SOS founder Kartick Satyanarayan said: 'The chains around his legs had spikes which were cutting into his flesh - and each time he moved puss would ooze out of wounds. Pain and brutality were all he knew'

After realizing that his suffering will soon be over he cried tears of joy. “The team were astounded to see tears roll down his face during the rescue. It was so incredibly emotional for all of us. We knew in our hearts he realized he was being freed.”

Raju was driven sedated to the sanctuary by brave rescuers 350 miles to the charity’s Elephant Conservation and Care Centre at Mathura

His open-air ride was one of his first tastes of true freedom.

Over the weekend, Raju received emergency medical attention to his wounds as well as a bath and food.

He was fed and loved… The long and difficult rescue was emotional for Raju, but also for his saviors.

The charity is certain that Raju will spend the rest of his life free from suffering.

The daring rescue came exactly a year to the day since the charity was alerted to Raju's plight by the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department in India. The heroes at Wildlife SOS saved Raju from decades of torture. He will finally know freedom and days without pain and torture. It’s incredible that he was able to survive this long and endure such abuse. Breaks my heart to see such suffering and can't help but wonder that for all that are saved, how many needlessly suffer until the end? Why is a human life so special yet an animal’s taken so easily? On the one hand the humans who saved Raju are wonderful examples of our species, but on the other the people who kept him deserve to rot. Share his amazing rescue with others. If you see animal abuse, say something. Don’t let innocent creatures suffer.
