She Collected 20,000 Teabags . . . Then Made Something That Dropped My Jaw

In her home country of Malaysia, artist Red Hong Yi is known simply by the name, Red. Here she's created a large portrait of a "teh tarik man," or a tea seller.

Teh tarik in Malay is a common drink found in coffeeshops across the country. It's a sweet, frothy, milky tea beverage said to be super delicious.

Red gathers her materials together to begin the portrait of teh tarik man, AND it's made completely of tea bags.

Red collected 20,000 teabags and then steeped them in varying degrees of water making them different shades of brown. For the deepest shades of brown she used food dyes.

She then joined the teabag to wire mesh panels and individually stapled them to wire grids in a specific order creating the portrait's image.

Instead of a painted brush stroke for color, Red staples teabags of color together. The technique must take much patients and care.

The wire grids with the teabag then were hung within a traditional wooden frame. Additionally more teabags are added to form the image's canisters and a shaved ice machine in the foreground allowing the viewer to see the teh tarik man at a coffeeshop in Malaysia.
